The Department of Mathematics and Methods of Teaching Mathematics

The history of the Department of Mathematics began with the reorganization of the Pedagogical Technical School into an Institute of Social Education. To provide the teaching of mathematics and other technical disciplines, a techno-mathematical department was created in 1932, headed by the teacher of mathematics Yuri Ilyich Kara-Kurkchi.

By order № 107 dated 03.09.1936, Ivan Mikhailovich Kozetov was appointed to act as the Head of the Department of Mathematics.

In 1944, Pavel Maksimovich Zynkovsky performed the duties of the Head of the Department of Mathematics.

In March 1944, Associate Professor of Mathematics Lev Semenovich Malyavin returned from evacuation and was appointed the Head of the department by order №32 of March 21, 1944. After the death of Malyavin in 1953, the department was headed by Associate Professor Mikhail Vasilyevich Shcheglov.

In 1955, Vladimir Logvinovich Rvachov became the Head of the Department of Higher Mathematics, and in 1960 he became the first Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences of the Berdyansk State Pedagogical Institute.

In 1963, the department was divided into two: the Department of Higher Mathematics, headed by Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Associate Professor Anatoly Fomich Rakov, and the Department of Elementary Mathematics, headed by Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences Viktor Danilovich Tchaikovsky.

In 1972, the departments were merged and Anatoly Fomich Rakov became the Head of the Department of Mathematics and Methods of Teaching Mathematics.

From 1978 to 1983, the Department of Mathematics and Methods of Teaching Mathematics was headed by Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Associate Professor Sergei Anatolyevich Rakov.

In 1983, Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences and Associate Professor Vyacheslav Petrovich Verzhikovsky became the Head of the Department of Mathematics and Methods of Teaching Mathematics.

Since 1999, the Department of Mathematics and Methods of Teaching Mathematics is headed by Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, Associate Professor Valentina Ivanovna Shavalyova.

In February 2004, Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences and Associate Professor Vyacheslav Petrovich Verzhikovsky was re-appointed the Head of the department.

In 2006, two departments were established on the basis of the Department of Mathematics and Methods of Teaching Mathematics: the Department of Mathematics and Methods of Teaching Mathematics and the Department of Mathematical Modeling and Computational Mathematics.

Since 2006, the Department of Mathematics and Methods of Teaching Mathematics is headed by Candidate of Technical Sciences Olha Hryhorivna Onufriienko.

Since 2011, the Department of Mathematics is headed by Natalia Stepanivna Vahina.

To date, the department has nine teachers, one of whom is a professor and doctor of physical and mathematical sciences; eight candidates of sciences (physics and mathematics, technical and pedagogical sciences), including five associate professors.

Among the employees of the Department of Mathematics are graduates of the university: Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor Lytvyn O.M., Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Associate Professor Verzhikovsky V.P., Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, Associate Professor Krasnozhon O.B., Senior Lecturers Kovalenko V. M., Matsyuk V.V., Pastyreva K.U.

The teachers of the department are permanent members of scientific seminars functioning at the university and at various scientific institutions in Kyiv, Kharkiv, Donetsk, etc.

The department hosts a methodological seminar “Means of Enhancing the Applied Orientation of Mathematical Education of Pupils and Students” (supervised by Candidate of Technical Sciences, Associate Professor Olha Hryhorivna Onufriienko) and a task group “Innovations in Mathematical Education” (supervised by Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, Associate Professor Vahina Natalia Stepanivna).

The Department of Mathematics is a graduate department for students majoring in the “Mathematics” program and provides teaching for students of the Faculty of Physical, Mathematical, Computer, and Technological Education in the following disciplines: mathematical analysis, functional analysis, complex analysis, differential equations, linear algebra, algebra and theory numbers, analytical geometry, differential geometry and topology, discrete mathematics, higher mathematics, etc.

The teachers of the department supervise the research work of students and writing of term papers and dissertations, they prepare students to participate in national and international student competitions and Olympiads (5 individual and 2 team prizes for the last five years).

In addition to the Faculty of Physical, Mathematical and Technological Education, the members of the department teach fundamental and applied mathematical disciplines at the Faculty of Psychological and Pedagogical Education and Arts, Faculty of Humanities and Economics, Faculty of Physical, Mathematical, Computer, and Technological Education.

The employees of the department are actively working on updating the teaching materials, publishing textbooks, creating individual components of computer-based methods of teaching mathematical disciplines.

Research at the department is conducted within the complex theme “Means of Enhancing the Applied Orientation of Mathematical Education of Pupils and Students”.

For student youth of the Faculty of Physical, Mathematical, and Technological Education, the annual mathematical KVN is traditionally held among 4th-year students of physical and mathematical programs. The staff members of the department are directly involved in its preparation, organization, and conduct.
