The Department of Speech Therapy was established in 2003 in connection with the opening of the specialty ‘Defectology. Speech therapy’ at Berdiansk State Pedagogical University. In 2012, by way of merging of the two Departments, the Department of Applied Psychology and Speech Therapy was founded, which is headed by Olena V. Starynska, a PhD in Psychology, an Associate Professor.

In November 2007, the lecturers of the Department of Speech Therapy joined the Ukrainian Association of Remedial Pedagogues, which was founded and officially registered on August 17, 2005, for the purpose of professional development of remedial pedagogues and specialists working in the field of education and social protection.
