The Department of Foreign Languages and Teaching Methods

 

The history of the Department of Foreign Languages begins in 1953 on the first day of the foundation of Berdiansk Teacher Training Institute. One of the first heads was Alla. I. Volkova, a Senior Lecturer who contributed to the establishment of the department as an independent educational unit. In the period from 1985 to 2002, the department was headed by Liudmyla O. Chulkova, a PhD in Education, Associate Professor. Under her guidance, a new program subject area was opened − ‘Language and Literature (English, German)’, initially at the Faculty of Preschool Education, and later − at the Faculty of Primary School Teacher Training and the Faculty of Philology. In February 2005, as a result of the reorganization of the Department of Foreign Languages, in order to train philologists in the field of ‘Philology, the Department of Romance and Germanic Philology was established that was headed by:

2005-2007 − Nadia S. Zubova, PhD in Philology, Associate Professor;

2007-2012 – Mykhailo P. Kocherhan, Doctor of Philology, Professor;

2012 − Natalia Ye. Lemish, PhD in Philology, Associate Professor;

2012-2013 − Valerii V. Bohdan, PhD in Philology, Associate Professor.

In September 2013, the two departments merged into one − the Department of Foreign Languages and Teaching Methods under the guidance of Olena B. Yarova, a PhD in Education, an Associate Professor. Since then the department was also headed by:

2014-2016 – Iryna Ya. Hlazkova, DSc in Education, Professor;

2016-2017 – Iryna V. Shymanovych, PhD in Education, Associate Professor.

Since September 2017, the Department has been run by N. Yu. Panova, Doctor of Philology, Professor.

Today, the department employs:

Serdiuk and Iryna V. Shkola; Yulia P. Priadko, PhD in Education, Senior Lecturer; PhDs in Education, Associate Professors Tetiana S. Rozumna, Oksana A. Khalabuzar and Iryna V. Shymanovych; Olena M. Kondratieva, PhD in Education, Senior Lecturer and I. D. Nagai, Senior Lecturer.

In 2017, the licenses were obtained to provide education for program subject areas 035 Philology (Germanic Languages and Literatures (including translation), major – English), educational level: bachelor and 014 Secondary Education (Language and Literature), educational level: master.

Since 2017 p. the lecturers of the department (Professor Іryna Hlazkova as well as Associate Professors Bohdana Saliuk and Iryna Shkola) have been participants in the grant program “English Access Microscholarship Program 2017-2019” supported by Project Harmony International and US Embassy in Ukraine.

 

The department runs English Speaking Club in its facilities where students have the opportunity to communicate with the representatives of English-speaking countries.

Within the framework of modernisation of an educational process and in order to increase the level of knowledge of foreign languages, there operate three language laboratories.

Sharing best practice and attending a refresher course by the lecturers of the department takes place due to cooperation with the scholars at higher educational institutions, in particular, Zaporizhia National University, V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University, Bohdan Khmelnytskyi Melitopol State Pedagogical University and Mariupol State University.

The lecturers of the department introduce the latest pedagogical technologies into the educational process, constantly increase the scientific and methodological level of teaching, systematically publish scientific articles in domestic and foreign editions, annually participate in international and national scientific conferences and work on the development of methodological materials of the disciplines that are taught at the Department. The content of the educational process at the department is aimed at humanizing the training of specialists, which provides for all-round development of a student’s personality, full development of their abilities, offering opportunities for achieving successful and profound proficiency in educational material.

 

 

Giving expert guidance on students’ scientific work is one of the essential components of the department activity. Students’ articles on foreign philology and methods of teaching foreign languages are published annually in the scientific collections of BSPU and many other higher education institutions.

Every year the lecturers of the department hold the first round of the National Olympiad in foreign languages.

The department constantly organizes international scientific and practical conferences, co-organised by foreign and domestic higher educational institutions.
